Buildings make the character of a city, but not only from the outside. The common spaces inside them, like the entrance hall or the stairway, always have their own aesthetics, sounds or smells, from one city to another. They tell us about the people inhabiting the building. Austrians even have their own german word for these spaces: “Stiegenhaus”. In this series, I put the focus on them to discover an additional, intimate aspect of the city of Vienna. These pictures are mostly taken in old working-class houses and buildings, usually far from the city center, providing a new approach to the city and a shocking contrast to classic Vienna, charming and imperial, that tourists expect to find when they visit the city.
